No 12-14

No.12 and 14 Castle Street
No.12-14

No 12-14

These two properties appear to be two parts of a whole, with a continuous roof line from the front view, although the rear has more differences - whether that was always the case, I have no idea.

This is a building of vernacular style, with the overall low profile and asymmetrical fenestration, so probably of a good age. It is shown on the 1750-60 map, but is probably much older than that.

There are very few old photos from which to get any clues as to recent changes that may have taken place. Photos seem to have been taken from this location looking in both directions, but rarely including this building!

Of the photos that do include at least a section of this building, the only obvious changes seen are the addition of the two oriel windows overhanging the brook. As with most properties, the other windows would have been replaced at some point, but the even casements have been retained.

I imagine that the framing and small canopy on the doorway to No.12 was added at some point, but have no evidence as to when that would have been.

My own memory of the building only goes back to the 1990s, when No.12 was in use as "Alec's tea room" for a while.
